Let's Go Flying: Discussions About Hot Air Balloons

*Did you know that hot air balloons were first flown in 1783. The first passengers were a duck, a rooster and a sheep. The balloon flew on a tether for 8 minutes and the animals were not hurt.

*Did you know there was a Balloon Corp during the Civil War? The Balloon Corp was responsible for collecting information about the opposing side. The balloons were able to gather reconnaissance up to 15 miles away. The Corp was established by Abraham Lincoln and had 7 balloons in it's fleet. In response, the Confederacy also began a balloon fleet. Unfortunately, the balloons also made easy targets and Balloon Corp was disbanded two years after the war began.
